Having been around for more than 160 years, UnionChemnitz says it is the oldest existing machine tool manufacturer in Europe. Based in Germany, the designer and manufacturer of custom horizontal boring mills (HBMs) presents its first HBM built in the United States (in cooperation with sister company KPM) at IMTS Booth S-8596. In fact, the PCR 160 floor-type HBM with 6.4-inch spindle diameter is said to be unique as the first built in the U.S. with a complete hydrostatic guidance system. The company says hydrostatic guidance of both the column and the ram offers virtually wear-free operation and high precision.

Over the past 15 years, UnionChemnitz has delivered more than 60 HBMs to North American customers. Its sales and service unit is located in Ford City, Pennsylvania, as is KPM, where the PCR 160s are being built (these machines are designed in Germany). After the show, the PCR 160 on display will be installed at Herkules USA in Ford City, a manufacturer of roll grinders, horizontal lathes and special machines. It will be used to machine lathe headstock castings that can weigh as much as 15 tons as well as other large machine tool components.

UnionChemnitz shares its IMTS booth with another sister company, WaldrichSiegen, a manufacturer of heavy-duty mills, lathes and grinding machines. (Both companies are part of the HurculesGroup, as is KPM and Herkules USA.) New company Presidents Dr. Benedikt Sitte (UnionChemnitz, since October 2015) and Marco Tannert (WaldrichSiegen, since October 2016) are attending the show for the first time.
