Burnishing Tools Replace Secondary Processes

Available from Monaghan Tooling Group, Elliot Tool Technology’s carbide-roll burnishing tools are designed to improve surface irregularities and tool marks, producing surface finishes from 4 to 20 microinches (0.1 to 0.5 microns). They are well-suited for CNC turning centers, manual lathes, OD and ID/OD burnishing applications. According to the company, this technique eliminates secondary processes such as grinding, honing and polishing by automating those processes in the primary CNC machine. 

Carbide rolls can be reconditioned several times, extending tool life. Shank sizes are available from 1.5" to 2.0" (40 to 50 mm) in diameter to process overall lengths of 9.5" to 18" (241.3 to 457.2 mm). The roll radius ranges from 0.032" to 0.093" (0.787 to 2.36 mm).

Spherical-surface burnishing tools are available in either 1" or 25-mm square shank size, with a 0.125" radius. The tools can be used for burnishing spherical and contoured surfaces to finishes as low as 2 to 8 Ra microinches.

Carbide-roll burnishing is suitable for a variety of parts and ductile metals under HRC 40, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum and cast iron.
