HMC Built for Mass Production

IMTS 2018: The SH-5000P HMC from Tongtai, displayed in the booth of Absolute Machine Tools, is designed for high part volumes and offers a smaller footprint than the previous model.

The SH-5000P HMC from Tongtai, displayed in the booth of Absolute Machine Tools, is designed for mass production. Measuring 90” wide, the HMC has a 35 percent smaller footprint than the previous model .

The machine features an XY traveling-column design. The pallet moves in Z. The rotary-type automatic pallet changer, located in front of the machine,is designed for accessibility and exchanges pallets in seven seconds. For pallet rotation in the machining envelope, a full contouring B axis indexes the pallet every 0.001 degree and a hydraulic clamping mechanism clamps the pallet in place. The B axis has a 90-degree index time of 0.76 seconds.

The HMC features a Meehanite cast iron frame with a three-point leveling system. An LHL/LubeUSA grease lubrication system lubricates ways and ballscrews and reduces coolant contamination and waste oil. The 40-mm-diameter (1.57") ballscrews are class three with a double nut pre-loaded and pre-tensioned design, facilitating a traverse rate of 2,362 ipm. Furthermore, 1.0-G acceleration and deceleration reduces non-cut time. The absolute pulse coder servo system does not require zero return. The machine can be started at any time from any position. A rear discharge chip removal system includes a center trough design with high-volume chip wash. A dual-level, caterpillar-type conveyor with fines separator suits most types of material.

An integral spindle capable of speeds as high as 15,000 rpm can accelerate from 0 to 7,000 in 0.48 seconds and 0 to 15,000 in 1.9 seconds. Deceleration from 12,000 rpm to 0 requires 0.8 seconds. The spindle produces 50 hp peak (10 min. rating), 35 HP in high and 25HP in low while producing 184 ft./lbs. of peak torque at only 980 RPM. Big Plus dual contact spindle is standard. Air/oil mist is used for spindle bearing lubrication to increase spindle life. The standard 60-station ATC offers 1.4 seconds tool-to-tool change time due to the use of the patented Sankyo RollerDrive gearbox for the arm mechanism. Average chip-to-chip time is 3 seconds. The Fanuc OiM-F conversational control is standard.
