Laser EX Combines Traditional Machining with Laser Metal Deposition

Okuma America Corp. introduces the MU-8000V Laser EX. A super multitasking machine that combines five-axis machining with a Trumpf laser to provide state-of-the-art laser additive technology.

Okuma America Corp. introduces the MU-8000V Laser EX. A super multitasking machine that combines five-axis machining with a Trumpf laser to provide state-of-the-art laser additive technology. It’s described as the ultimate process-intensive machine, one that enables complete part production on one machine. At IMTS, booth 338500, this machine will be shown manufacturing an engine case.

This next-generation MU-8000V Laser EX revolutionizes production for manufacturers. It implements laser metal deposition (LMD) technology with the ability to cut unique parts of many different shapes and sizes. LMD supplies powder from nozzles and performs laser melting and bonding to the parent material. Ultimately, this allows for various types of materials to be combined and layered; and, in addition, it provides the possibility of three-dimensional fabrication and cladding.

With the MU-8000V Laser EX, parts can also be repaired and inspected throughout production. An infinitely-variable control of laser spot diameters (0.4 to 8.5 mm in diameter) increases efficiency and resolution. By implementing LMD instead of laser metal fusion (LMF), this cutting-edge machine offers these advantages: mid-process part inspection and material exchange, coolant use in work envelope, faster process than powder bed fusion, and three-dimensional fabricating.

The MU-8000V Laser EX delivers innovative machining excellence. New Laser EX products are on the horizon, and they will feature laser hardening, resin mold repairs, and process-intensive turn hardening and grinding.
