Gesswein’s PUK U5 micro TIG welder has been developed for same-day mold and die repair without pre-welding heat treatment. Designed as an alternative to a laser welder, the machine produces small, consistent spot welds that penetrate the mold surface. The welded areas are said to withstand the pressures and working conditions of the molding process. All heat is concentrated at the spot of the weld to eliminate distortion and metal stress caused by overheating.
The machine can produce one spot weld every 0.8 seconds and polish out quickly, according to the company. Presets for common applications are pre-programmed on the machine. The sharp electrode tip comes in 0.6 and 0.8 mm lengths and touches the exact location of the weld spot for accurate weld placement. A 10X magnetic microscope attaches directly to the mold, and an integrated LED lighting illuminates the welding surface. The machine is designed for use with common tool steels, stainless steels, aluminum and copper.
