SMW Autoblok introduces the WPS XL (Workpiece Positioning System) featuring manual zero-point clamping, tailored for large workpieces and five-axis machining. It is used for milling, measuring and grinding operations. Designed with an emphasis on flexibility and speed, it is said that users can reduce their setup times by 90% or more with single quick actuation for rapid module operations in only three rotations.
The system features a pull-down force of 40 kN, holding force of 100 kN, maximum torque of 30 Nm and repeatability of less than 0.01 mm. The solid drive system comprises hardened components, while the three clamping slides can enable maximum hold during clamping. Additionally, the system features Proofline technology that is fully sealed against swarf and chips for low maintenance.
The WPS XL is said to offer interchangeability with all types of industry stationary workholding systems. According to the company, the system includes the ability to use, with standard WPS modules, specially-designed clamping bolts with fasteners from 10-24 mm that are case hardened with corrosion-resistant coating. The technology also works with SMW Autoblok’s Workpiece Preparation Device (WPS-PPD) for machining plates, molds and dies of various sizes for OP1O and OP20. This can enable a fast, accurate method of changing various components within the PPD system.
The WPS XL is part of SMW Autoblok’s full line of WPS clamping modules that are offered in: 40-, 60-, 80-, 100-, 140, 160, and 200-mm heights and is said to enable precision clamping of virtually any size workpiece. All modules can be mounted on a t-slotted table or grid plate that is manufactured with highly tempered quality steel with a coating to protect against rust and contaminants.
SMW Autoblok also highlights its Plus5 V5 Zero Point Vise system. The Plus5 V5 can lock and unlock pins with 180 degree rotation. Omni directional clamping is used for uniformity while performing all-directional clamping. This can interface with industry-standard products using 52-mm or 96-mm pin spacing. The V5 Vise system provides self-centering operation for five-axis machines. The device has fully protected and sealed lead screws and incorporates SinterGrip inserts for multi-vise integrations as well as for eliminating dove tailing or crimping operations. Its quality-price ratio makes the vise ideal to locate, support and secure workpieces in a variety of manufacturing operations, according to the company.
The pin locking mechanism consists of a cam that is operated using an eccentric pin. The cam can lock all four pins simultaneously for enhanced precision and clamping performance. The force vector transmission system can act by binding the pins uniformly and in all directions. Additional features include: high-precision self-centering clamping with maximum repeatability, compact design for ease of accessibility, wide clamping range, clamping force up to 40 kN (80Nm) and jaw width of 87.5mm.
The KIT-RR chuck system, which is engineered for manual or robotic use, is also being displayed. The system incorporates the RR Adapter and the RR soft top jaws, which, through its two-point contact design, can be switched from OD clamping to ID clamping in seconds. The KIT-RR system can be locked and unlocked using a simple push pin, which can also provide safety against accidental release. Designed for high quality, precision and safety, the device is said to eliminate the need for screws and complicated change operations.
SMW Electronics, a division of SMW Autoblok, announces its line of grippers to automate key processes for industrial and electronic applications, including machine tools, material handling, inspection, assembly and more. The Motiact gripper series is designed to perform precise, consistent and accurately monitored gripping operations for moving parts, pallets and chucks in and out of CNC machines and automated workcells. These grippers are equipped with an incremental measuring system, intended for adjusting gripping pressure, linear positioning and speed control as standard features.
Motiact series of mechatronic grippers are said to be a reliable solution for movement tasks, including the sensing and loading/unloading of various types and sizes of parts. The company’s line of MX-S small parts, MX-M universal and MX-L long-stroke grippers can be used to move large loads in the automation process, are said to be up to IP67 rated for high durability in any environment. The MX-S grippers also come with a high-speed variant for efficiency and precision, according to the company. The MX-L 520 mechatronic large-stroke gripper can provide gripping forces ranging from 10-40 kN, a large jaw stroke, prepositioning and clamping force adjustment. The MX-L520 is designed to offer maximum safety and reliability in the event of a power failure. The large gripper has a maximum stroke per jaw of 99 mm and repeatability at ±0.02 mm, which can provide customers with the precision and control needed to optimize workflow.
All Motiact grippers use the company’s inductive coupling system that can enable the grippers to rotate a full 360 degrees in both directions, intended for greater flexibility and versatility. Non-contact power and signal transmission technology can offer numerous other advantages, including gallowing for transmission distances of up to 5 mm and flexible installation. The signal transmission between the controller and the gripper is contactless via an integrated interface, which is not affected by the rotation of the handset or by vibration or high speeds. Even over non-metallic obstacles, data transmission is possible.
Furthermore, the stationary base unit of the coupler can communicate with several mobile units if required (dynamic pairing). With the combination of the inductive coupler and the Motiact grippers, the complete product line is designed for use in end-of-arm tooling.
