Turn-Mill Includes Motorized, Five-Axis, 18,000-rpm Milling Spindle

Index’s G220 turn-mill includes a motorized five-axis, 18,000-rpm milling spindle and a tool turret with Y axis.

Index’s G220 turn-mill includes a motorized five-axis, 18,000-rpm milling spindle and a tool turret with Y axis. The machine provides maximum machining flexibility for turning and milling complex parts in a single setup from barstock ranging to 90 mm in diameter with chuck diameters of 210 mm. Distance between spindles is 1,280 mm with a maximum turning length of 1,000 mm.

The cutting method, similar to the Klingelnberg gear-generating method, uses the machine’s Y-B axis provided in the milling head. According to the company, the process is ideal for smaller (0.6- to 4-module) bevel gears, producing high-quality gears, front and back, faster than conventional bevel gear machines.

The identical main and counter spindles provide a maximum speed of 5,000 rpm as well as 31.5/32 kW (100%/40%) of power and 125/170 Nm of torque. The fluid-cooled, five-axis, motorized milling spindle (11 kW of power, 19/30 Nm of torque, speeds ranging to 18,000 rpm) features hydrostatic bearings in the Y and B axes. The stable, circular guide further ensures rigidity and damping. The Y axis features a ± 80-mm stroke and the B axis, driven directly by a torque motor, supports a swivel range of -50 to +230 degrees. A large travel distance in the X direction enables machining to 30 mm below the turning center height. The motorized milling spindle operates using a one- or two-row tool chain magazine which provides space for 70 or 140 tools (HSK-A40).

Located in the lower part of the machine, the tool turret can accommodate VDI 25 and VDI 30 tool mountings in 18 or 12 stations, respectively, all of which can be equipped with individually driven tools (6 kW of power and 18 Nm of torque at 7,200 rpm).

A CNC-controlled, gantry-type removal unit can unload remnants from the main spindle as well as finished parts from the counter spindle.

The G220 includes the latest generation of the company’s C200 SL controller. Based on the Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl (solution line), it features an 18" touchscreen.
